acceptedrejected How To Qualify For Unemployment Benefits In Florida: Eligibility Criteria

The Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation will assess your claim for unemployment benefits by asking two questions: ‘How much money did you earn?’ and ‘Why was your employment terminated?’. If the answers to these questions meet the eligibility criteria of the AWI, your claim will be accepted.

    Financial Eligibility

This is the first test your claim must pass. Once you file your claim, the AWI will determine if your claim meets this criteria:

    - You must have received wages in at least two quarters of your base period.

Base Period: The first four quarters (three-month periods) of the last five quarters starting from the date you file the claim.

The quarters of a year are January to March, April to June, July to September and October to December.

    - You must have earned during your base period at least one and a half times the wages you received in your highest-earning quarter.

    - You must have earned a minimum of $3,400 during your entire base period.

    Reason for Termination

If you meet Florida AWI financial criteria for unemployment insurance benefits, the reason you left your last job will be checked. To qualify, you must have been laid-off due to no fault of your own. If you were sacked because of misconduct, such as stealing, negligence or any behavior that displays deliberate disregard of your boss’ interests, your claim may be disqualified.

This does not mean your claim will be automatically ruled out just because you got fired you. There are reasons your employer may fire you which are not considered misconduct in the eyes of the AWI. For instance, if you were fired for inefficiency, ordinary and isolated cases of negligence, good faith mistakes or for missing work due to no fault of your own (such as lack of transport or having to care for a close relative), you will still qualify for UI payments.

    IMPORTANT NOTICE:

If you have not received wages equivalent to 17 times your weekly benefit amount with your last employer, the reasons for terminating your previous employer will also be appraised.
